Final Fantasy Tactics

A Knightblade's Guide to Classes

The Job system in Final Fantasy Tactics is very sophisticated, a new iteration of the system introduced in Final Fantasy 5. The main features distinguishing it are twofold. Firstly, the job system in FF Tactics is hierarchical. In order for a character to qualify for a new class, she must first meet level requirements in one or more other classes. Secondly, the skills you learn in each class are not sequential; if you want to save your Wizard's job points for Fire 4, you may skip Fire 1 through 3 on the way.

In addition to progressing in Experience levels, your characters will also progress in Job levels. In the picture above, Kyoko (currently a Priest) is a level 58 character and a level 8 Thief.

Some jobs are very easy to learn. Since every character starts with the ability to be a Squire and a Chemist, each one will soon learn the classes that spawn from accumulating enough job points to reach level 2 in either class.

Others, like Samurai or Calculator, are quite difficult, requiring moderate levels in each of several classes. The Mime is the most challenging class of all, requiring a mix of high and moderate levels in no fewer than six classes.

The Bard and Dancer jobs are special cases. In addition to the other prerequisites, there is also a gender requirement. Bards must be male, and Dancers must be female.

Note also that I use the words "class" and "job" interchangeably. Sorry. :)
